ASAHPERD Tornado Relief Project

Life changed for many Alabamians on April 27 when 20+ tornadoes criss-crossed most portions of the state. As part of our effort to provide assistance, The Alabama State Association for HPERD (ASAHPERD) Board of Directors voted to adopt Hackleburg Elementary School. While we know there are many in need, we feel we can make the most impact by concentrating our efforts in one location that does not have as many resources at its disposal. The city of Hackleburg is in Northwest Alabama with a population of about 1600. Twenty-nine people died and all businesses and schools were destroyed. There are immediate and long term needs.
During Phase I, “Shoes on the Move”, we will purchase athletic shoes/sneakers and socks for every child in the elementary school. The Phase II equipment drive will begin in August once we know the needs of the Hackleburg schools.

This is just a reminder that the student Leadership Conference will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 starting at 1:00pm in Orange Beach, AL. If your students attend this conference, they will be allowed to attend the Spring Conference on the 15th and 16th at no cost for the conference. THEY MUST BE CURRENT ASAHPERD MEMBERS and they must pre-register by sending in the spring conference form by the deadline of April 10th.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation-New Youth Board

Youth leaders are raising their voices and inspiring their peers to live healthier lives! Twenty-five exceptional young people have been selected to serve on the 2010-2011 Youth Advisory Board for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The 2010-2011 Board members, ranging in age from 9-17 and representing 21 diverse states, will continue the leadership of past boards by creating social networking campaigns around healthy living, speaking at stakeholder conferences, engaging with government leaders and initiating healthy changes through service-learning and other projects at school and in their neighborhoods. Alliance for a Healthier Generation Honors 179 U.S. Schools for Combating Childhood Obesity

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, recognized 179 schools who have transformed their campuses into healthier places for students and staff. Each has distinguished itself with policies that meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program.

President Bill Clinton, American Heart Association Chairman Neil Meltzer, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation President and CEO Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey presented special awards during an event in New York City.

One of the country’s most extensive childhood obesity prevention efforts, schools that are part of the Healthy Schools Program are making significant changes in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity and staff wellness to help tomorrow’s generation be healthier.

It takes time, persistence and dedication to create and sustain any change, which is why the Healthy Schools Program focuses on gradual, systemic changes to the school environment. The 179 nationally recognized schools being celebrated prove that it is possible to change the culture of a school when staff, students and parents lead the change.

After having served as your President-Elect for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, it is with great enthusiasm that I assume the roll of Future Professionals President. This opportunity fits with my career expectations and path that has lead me from my HPER Majors club, to an ASAHPERD officer; and also to the SDAAPHERD board. I therefore look forward to contributing to the continued success of this great organization.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Kimberly Cook. I was born and raised in Florence, AL. In 2005, I was in the first graduating class from Florence High School. During my basketball career, I received a basketball scholarship at Northwest Shoals Community College, and earned an associates degree in general education in 2007. I am currently a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to become a physical education teacher; where I am currently the president of our human studies majors club called PHLAME (Physical Health Leaders in Athletics, Management, and Education). My passion for basketball has driven me to become a volunteer assistant girl’s varsity basketball coach at Hoover High School since 2008.

I want to thank everyone for allowing me to serve as the President of the FPC. It's been an honor to work under the leadership of Penny and with many outstanding future professionals. Serving on the ASAHPERD Board has taught me a lot about leadership. My first impression of a real board meeting was: "I don't want to grow up!" But the longer I served, the more it taught me about taking initiative, being responsible, networking, and working with other professionals in the field on the same goals. I have learned that often times you may be given a task, and its your responsibility to complete it even if no one is watching over you. Thanks to the great people who also serve on the board, I feel like we've had some very fun Student Leadership Conferences, tailgate parties and great sessions at several different fall and spring conferences. I heard someone say once that leadership isn't about what you complete while you serve, but what and who you leave behind you. Well thanks to the fact that Harris is my President-Elect, I didn't have to do anything to make sure I left someone good behind me! He's the most responsible, deserving person I could imagine to be your next President! I am confident that great things are to come next year!

Candace-we want you to know that we will miss you next year and we thank you for all the great things you did over the past two years! Good luck to you in the future :)

FPC President's View on Spring Conference

The 2010 Spring Conference was a huge success. The sessions were fantastic, the turn out was great, and the weather was wonderful! The Student Leadership Conference was a big hit this year. Thanks to everyone who attended, especially our new friends from Louisiana, Lafayette. Everyone seemed to enjoy the SLC sessions, volleyball on the beach, and the amazing food cooked by the chefs of ASU. The Conference on Friday and Saturday also went very well, and the sessions seemed to be well attended. There were also several impressive research posters presented. Its always fun down at Orange Beach. Future professionals- keep bringing people down!

Goals:
To work in the school system and promote new ideas for physical education. As physical educations teachers we have to keep P.E new and fun for our students.
I am also a youth leader for First Baptist Church Graymount.
I learned so many thing as a student at Alabama State University that I have carried to the table as a physical education teacher. As a teacher you have to be able to use all different types of resources to get your lesson out to your students.
"I believe that no matter where a student comes from, no matter what disability, or the background all students can learn if they are given the change. All the students across the world that are in classrooms are our future, so we have to invest time, love, and care. As a teacher I will do may best and give my all.

Shanekia as a teacher:

As a first year teacher you have to go in knowing that your job will not be like your internship. Yet I am saying this but I didn't go in that way and I had to give myself a wake up call. As a first year teacher you will have a lot of things to learn and you also have to set back and learn just how your school is run. Know that as a new teacher you have to make the best of what you have, what you are given and jump in head first and stand your ground. It was some days when I just felt like giving up but take it from me you have to have faith in GOD and yourself to do your job. Use all of your resources as a new teacher and remember that your there to make a change in somebody's life and just do your best each and every day!

Chantrice Whiting– Future Professional
Alabama State University GPA 2.95, Senior Majoring in Health Education.
Goal: To work in the public health system to promote a healthier lifestyle for students and young adults.
Experience (over 500 hrs): Kershaw YMCA (counselor and after school team leader), Antioch Baptist Church (youth department president).
As an employee at Kershaw YMCA, I became more aware of the need for my students and their parents to become better informed about a healthier lifestyle.
I began to involve the students in more activities (such as nutritional label reading where everyday students are required to bring a label from home). With this technique (having thirty or more students) several food groups are covered daily.
“I believe, no matter their beginning, every student wants to learn whether it is read, writing, or arithmetic. They want to be shown the way. I will, as a future educator do my part to steer students to a productive lifestyles; so that they will be proud of the choices they make.
